We rolled out our first 2.5 upgrade a few hours ago and already have a bit of feedback on the release.  Some folks are troubled by the missing/ hidden Dashboard link.  I have to admit that I didn't notice that the only way to get back to the dashboard is now with the blog links along the top.

It's a bit of trouble for account only users as they get dropped into their profile page and really don't have a menu along the top where blog users have Write Manage, etc.

Opinions?

edit: Oh, and setting up a temp test site for your users to muck around with turned out to be a very good idea if you want to try it on your own installs.

You know, I had a client say the exact same thing to me this morning.

"Where's the damn link to my dashboard?"

Honestly, in a standard 2.5 install the link just says dashboard at the top. With more than one blog on the 1.5RC, it lists blogs by name.

I see what the attempt was, but I don't think it has turned out well as a cross conversion.

Main point: Need "dashboard" link on the main nav bar.

But hey, there's a plugin to add it back in...

I'd just hardcode it.

Thanks for the response though.

Yeah Donncha said it was butt-ugly with the original MU drop-down box there. I thought it was clever lsiting the extra blog, but i hadn't really noticed yet the dashboard link was gone. took me *ages* to find the Options link.

here is what i did, looks pretty good actually (not so much in IE)

wp-admin/admin-header.php line #64
<h1><?php bloginfo('name'); ?><span id="viewsite"><a href="http://domain.com"><?php _e('Main Site') ?></a><a href="<?php echo trailingslashit( get_option('home') ); ?>"><?php _e('My Blog') ?></a><a href="http://domain.com/wp-admin/"><?php _e('My Dashboard') ?></a></h1>

wp-admin/wp-admin.css line #580-590 (around that area)
removed display: block;

see attached for how it turned out.

Not bad, and seems more logical.

How does it handle multiple blogs though?

The problem with going across the page is what happens with folks who have either really long titles or lots of blogs.  It's going to mess that display up.

I'd go for tabs across the top, personally.

Maybe off-colored to stand out a bit.

I can see why it is like it is out of the box though. There just isn't much you can do with it that is really effective.

The dropdown wasn't the best idea, and so about all you can do is put a tab across the top.
