I've been thinking about the ping multiple sites question and I've got a possible solution.

What if you were to setup your own pingomatic?

I don't think it would be that hard.  As I look at that site, all that's needed to be passed to it is the title of the blog, the url and the feed url.  You could do that in a simple xml outputted by the mu install.  Get a script to pick up the information or even do it internally via a plugin.  Have a built in list of the sites that you want to ping, run through them, and ping out the information.

Considering that regular wordpress has this built in, most of the code if not all of it is already provided and should be simple enough to copy over.

Doing a site check to make sure the url of the blog is one hosted by you would be a plus.  Cut down on abuse.

Might even be a selling point.

Opinions?

I just ping multiple sites, as needed.

To me, creating something like that (unless on another box) would more than likely be a performance hit over what's already possible within the code.

So you did an edit in the code to make it work?

Gotta admit that if the wp.org code can handle it, I'm rather surprised that the mu code can't.

Not a problem.  I'll take a look at the code.

I've got to admit that I like my idea though about setting up our own ping service.

If you decide to go through with it i'd be more than happy to host the domain or provide a wpmudev subdomain.

Thank you for teh offer but I was seeing this as something to be site specific so the site admin could determine which sites specifically to ping out to.

I have a victim um, I mean test subject to try this out on.  It's going to wait until january though.
